What One Load Means

One firewood load is defined as a full-size pickup truck load, loose-filled to the level of the bed rails. Firewood is not stacked and not heaped above the rails. Load volume may vary slightly depending on truck bed size and configuration.

Choosing the Right Firewood

Hardwood vs. Softwood

Hardwood (maple, oak, madrone, alder) produces more heat per volume, burns longer, and creates a consistent bed of coals. It is the better choice for home heating, wood stoves, and long-burning fires. Bigleaf Maple is the premium hardwood of the Pacific Northwest — it burns hot and slow, producing a deep coal bed that sustains heat for hours. Red Alder burns clean with minimal creosote buildup, making it a safer choice for frequent indoor burning and a traditional favorite for smoking salmon and meats.

Softwood (Douglas Fir, cedar, hemlock) ignites quickly, is lighter to handle, and burns with a pleasant aroma. It is excellent for outdoor fire pits, kindling, and short recreational fires. Douglas Fir produces a bright, crackling fire, while Western Red Cedar adds a classic Pacific Northwest campfire scent that homeowners love.

Green vs. Dry

Green firewood contains higher moisture content and needs to be seasoned (air-dried) for three to twelve months before burning. Buying green is more affordable and works well if you plan ahead and have storage space. Purchasing green wood in spring or early summer gives it plenty of time to dry before the heating season begins in October.

Dry firewood has been air-dried and is ready to burn immediately. It produces more heat, less smoke, and less creosote buildup in your chimney or flue. Dry wood is the better choice if you need firewood right away for immediate use.

How to Store Firewood Properly

Proper storage ensures your firewood stays dry and burns efficiently through the Pacific Northwest’s wet winters:

  • Stack firewood off the ground on a pallet, rack, or gravel pad to prevent moisture absorption from below
  • Keep stacks at least 20 feet from your home to discourage pests from migrating to your house
  • Cover the top of the stack with a tarp or firewood cover to shed rain, but leave the sides open for airflow
  • Store in a sunny location when possible to accelerate drying of green wood
  • Use the oldest wood first — First in, first out ensures you always burn the driest available wood
  • Never burn treated lumber, painted wood, or construction debris — These release toxic chemicals

Burning Tips for Pacific Northwest Homeowners

The wet Pacific Northwest climate presents unique challenges for firewood burning:

  • Mix species for the best fire — Start with softwood kindling (Douglas Fir or cedar), add alder for a steady mid-fire burn, and finish with maple for a long-lasting coal bed
  • Burn only seasoned or dry wood to minimize creosote buildup in your chimney
  • Have your chimney inspected annually — Pacific Northwest humidity and frequent burning increase creosote risk
  • Keep a supply of dry kindling indoors so you always have dry starter material regardless of weather
